Claude Code: installation and first workflow
Claude Code runs on several surfaces sharing one engine — the repo's CLAUDE.md, settings and MCP servers are identical everywhere:
- Terminal CLI — full functionality, the base for scripts and CI.
- IDE extensions — VS Code and JetBrains (Android Studio is built on the JetBrains platform, so the plugin comes from there; it requires the CLI).
- Desktop app — visual diff review, parallel sessions.
- Web — long-running tasks from the browser.
For an Android developer the practical setup is the terminal CLI plus the JetBrains plugin for Android Studio.
bash
# macOS / Linux / WSL — official installer
curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash
# macOS — Homebrew alternative
brew install --cask claude-code
# Windows — WinGet
winget install Anthropic.ClaudeCode
# Start it in a project
cd ~/projects/my-android-app
claudeInstallation options. Homebrew and WinGet do not auto-update — upgrade them manually from time to time.
Useful commands in a first session:
/init— analyses the project and creates a startingCLAUDE.md. If the file already exists it suggests improvements instead./context— shows which instruction files actually loaded. The first place to look when you suspect "it isn't reading CLAUDE.md"./model— model selection./permissions— managing permission rules./mcp— status of connected MCP servers.
For non-interactive (script/CI) runs, use the -p flag.
In an Android project's first session, tell the agent how long ./gradlew builds take. In large projects a full build takes minutes — pointing the agent at the narrow command (compiling a single module, for example) saves both time and tokens.
