Reading TikTok Studio: the retention curve and traffic sources
The vast majority of creators open analytics only to look at the view count. Yet what is in there is a curve showing where the video died — and that curve tells you directly what to fix.
[OFFICIAL] TikTok Studio gives you, per video:
- The retention curve — what share of viewers is still watching at each second
- Average watch time — how many seconds of the video get watched
- Percentage who watched it fully
- Traffic source — For You, search, profile, following, sound page
- New followers — how many people followed you from this video
| Curve shape | Diagnosis | The fix |
|---|---|---|
| Steep drop in the first 2-3 seconds | The hook fails — visual, on-screen text or first line | Rewrite the hook entirely. Leave the rest of the video alone |
| Good for 3 seconds, then drops at 5-8s | The hook made a promise the video did not immediately keep | Cut the preamble, get to the point two seconds sooner |
| Slow decline through the middle | The pace is low — long shots, repetition, filler | Add a cut or a frame change every 2-3 seconds |
| A spike at the very end | The loop is working — people are rewatching | Repeat this format and tighten the loop further |
| A flat line at a low level | A small loyal audience — the video is right for the niche, the hook is not broad | Keep the topic, write the hook for a wider audience |
The traffic-source figure tells you what state the account is in. It is the panel most people never open.
- For You high (70%+) — normal, healthy distribution
- Search high — the SEO side is working; this is the most durable traffic, because it keeps coming for years
- Profile high — people see one video, open the profile and watch the rest; an audience is forming
- Following high, For You low — the video never left your own followers
- Sound page — traffic from a trending sound; usually small and low quality
[PRACTICE] If the For You share suddenly falls from 90% to 20% and this repeats across every new video, there may be an account-level problem. A drop on a single video is just that video being weak.
Where to keep the numbers: TikTok Studio makes some metrics for older videos harder to reach over time. Keep a simple table (Google Sheets, Notion, even a notebook) and write six numbers after every video: date, format, views, 3-second hold, completion, shares.
After 30 videos that table will be worth far more to you than any blog post — because those are your audience's numbers.
🛠 Practice task
Fill in the sheet from the example for your next 10 videos (date, format, views, 3-second hold, completion, shares, For You share, one note).
It is done when you can look at the sheet and write two lists: "2 formats that work for me" and "2 formats that do not" — each backed by the numbers from at least three videos.
