The hook catalogue: templates that win the first 3 seconds
The hook is the first one to three seconds of a video, and in practice it decides the fate of all your other work. The reason is simple: [OFFICIAL] the recommendation system shows your video to a group and watches how they behave. If people leave at second two, the system never measures the rest.
A hook arrives through three channels at once — and most creators use only one:
- Visual — what is in the first frame (movement, a result, an unusual object)
- Text — the first line written on screen (a muted viewer sees only this)
- Audio — the first spoken word
[PRACTICE] The most common failure: the creator says a great line, but the first frame is a static person sitting in front of a wall and nothing is written on screen. To a muted viewer that video is empty.
| Hook type | Template | When it works |
|---|---|---|
| Result first | Show the result, then "I did this in 20 minutes" | Anything with a visual result: code, design, repairs, cooking |
| Mistake warning | "If you're making this mistake, you're losing ___" | When the audience already does the thing — the widest-working template |
| Number + specificity | "___ in 3 steps", "___ in 90 seconds" | Instructional content; the number promises a length |
| Contradiction | "Everyone says ___. It's wrong." | When a widespread belief exists in the niche; it drives comments |
| Direct address | "If you're a ___, this one's for you" | A narrow audience; fewer views but better retention and follows |
| Process mid-stream | Start in the middle of the work — no introduction at all | Anything with an interesting process; it starts without a greeting |
| Question | "Why does ___ never work?" | When the audience has a real problem. A generic question does not |
The four openings that kill a video:
- "Hi, today I'm going to talk about ___" — two seconds saying nothing
- "Welcome to my channel" — the viewer does not care
- "In this video we'll see that..." — it promises without delivering
- "Before we start, subscribe" — you have given nothing and are already asking
Rule: the first line must come from inside the subject. No preamble. After writing a script, delete the first sentence and start from the second — in eight cases out of nine the video improves.
Building a hook bank — the habit with the highest return.
[PRACTICE] The single habit creators get the most out of: open a document and, while scrolling, write down every hook that stopped you. Not the video's topic — the hook's structure.
Say you see "Everyone makes this 40-manat mistake". Do not write the topic; write the template: "Everyone makes this [amount] mistake". A month later you hold 50 templates, and thinking up a hook for a new video becomes a 30-second job.
Then write three hooks per video and pick the best. The first hook that comes to mind is almost never the best one.
Design for the muted viewer. A large share of people watch TikTok with the sound off — on transport, at work, at night.
The practical consequence: the hook must also exist as on-screen text. A hook that is only spoken does not exist for much of the audience.
Rules for the text hook: no more than six to eight words, large type, in the upper third of the screen (the caption and buttons occupy the bottom), with contrast against the background.
🛠 Practice task
Open a hook-bank document and collect 30 hook templates over two days (templates, not topics).
Then write three hooks for your next video from the bank and read all three aloud. Pick the strongest, then split it across the three channels: what appears in the first frame, which six words go on screen, what the first spoken line is — and make sure none of the three repeats another.
It is done when the bank holds 30 templates and your next video's hook is written out across all three channels.
