Views from TikTok search: captions, spoken words and Creator Search Insights

Almost every creator optimises for the For You feed and forgets search entirely. Yet search traffic has two advantages:

  • It is durable — For You views die in three days; search views keep coming for months, even years
  • It carries intent — the person searched for something specific; if you are promoting an app, that one person is worth ten who arrived from For You

[OFFICIAL] TikTok explicitly lists captions, sounds and hashtags among the factors it considers. The text side of a video is data the system reads, not decoration.

SurfaceWhat to doTypical mistake
CaptionWrite the topic as a full sentence, in the words a person would search"New video 🔥" — carries no words at all
Spoken wordsSay the key term out loud — TikTok transcribes audioNever actually pronouncing the topic's name
On-screen textPut the key term on screen tooOnly emoji and short phrases
HashtagThree to five narrow, topic-declaring tags#fyp #viral — on every video, carrying no signal
CommentsWrite an explanation in the comments with extra key termsLeaving the comment section empty
Video title / coverPut the topic legibly on the cover imageLetting the cover frame be picked at random

The most-forgotten SEO channel: your own voice.

[PRACTICE] TikTok transcribes speech (auto-captions are the proof). The words you say in a video can be found in search.

The practical consequence: say the topic's name out loud. Most creators say "this tool", "this method" and never name it — so the video is never found under that word.

Wrong: "I built the app in 20 minutes with this tool" Right: "I built the app in 20 minutes with Flutter"

Same sentence, one word different — and the video now competes in the "Flutter" search.

Creator Search Insights — the fastest way to find topics.

[OFFICIAL] This tool inside TikTok Studio shows you what people are searching for, and includes a "content gap" view: topics that are searched but under-served with videos.

That is the most valuable data a creator gets, because competition there is thin. A new account struggles to outrank large creators in the For You feed; in an under-served search topic you can simply be first.

How to use it:

  • Studio → Creator Search Insights → browse terms in your niche
  • Note the ones flagged as searched-but-under-served
  • Shoot one video per topic and use the same words in the caption

On caption length. TikTok has raised the caption limit several times over the years and the current number may have changed again — check it in the app rather than trusting a figure in a blog post.

The practical approach does not depend on the limit: the caption should say what the video is about in a full sentence, using the key terms. One line is enough; you do not need an essay, but "New video 🔥" is not enough either.

🛠 Practice task

Open Creator Search Insights and browse 15 terms in your niche. Split them into two columns: high search + lots of content and high search + little content. Pick five topics from the second column.

Then rewrite the captions of your last three videos: instead of emoji and generic tags, state the topic as a full sentence using the searched terms.

It is done when five topics are picked, three captions are rewritten, and your next video carries the key term across all four channels (caption, audio, on-screen text, comment).
