Promoting your own app or product with TikTok
Promoting your own product on TikTok differs from ordinary content in one way: the moment the audience senses an advert, they leave. So the model that works is not "shoot an ad" but build useful content and show the product inside it.
[PRACTICE] The ratio that works: three of every five videos are useful content without the product, two feature it. The logic is simple — the useful videos bring the audience, the product videos convert it. Shoot only product videos and there is no audience to convert.
Accounts that ignore this ratio show a typical signature: views arrive, followers do not, and downloads are near zero.
| Format | How it works | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Problem video (no product) | Names the audience's real problem and gives the principled fix | The strongest format — it brings the audience |
| Result demo | Screen recording: input → result, 10-15 seconds | When the product's benefit is visible |
| "How I built it" (build in public) | Shows the work behind the product | Technical audiences; it builds loyalty |
| Comment reply | Answering a real user's question — the most credible format | As soon as comments arrive |
| Before / after | The workflow without the product versus with it | When it shows time or effort saved |
| Failure story | Telling what did not work — it builds trust | To rebalance when the audience starts sensing a sales pitch |
The link in bio, and measuring the traffic.
TikTok does not allow a direct link from a video — traffic goes through the profile. The practical consequences:
- A link in bio depends on account type (stage 1: a business account allows it)
- Profile traffic is critical — the person has to open the profile first. So the profile photo, the bio and the covers (stage 3) feed directly into download numbers
- Measure the traffic — add UTM parameters to the link or use a separate short link so you can isolate downloads coming from TikTok
[PRACTICE] The most common mistake: saying "link in bio" in every video. In the useful videos it is not needed — their job is building the audience. Save the call to action for the product videos.
How a product video is built — so it does not read as an ad.
[PRACTICE] The difference is the hook. An ad opens with the product; a video that works opens with the problem, and the product appears in the middle as the solution.
- The ad: "Introducing my new app, it does ___" → the viewer leaves at second two
- What works: "You've got 40 hours of recorded lectures and you've never opened one" → the problem lands → "here's how I solved it" → the product appears at second eight, as the solution
Three rules:
- Problem first, product in the middle — never the reverse
- Show the product, do not describe it — ten seconds of on-screen demo beats thirty seconds of explanation
- One call to action, at the end, short — "it's in my profile" is enough; insistent repetition costs you the audience
What to measure — not views.
[PRACTICE] When promoting a product, view count is a misleading metric. The chain to measure is:
- Views → profile visits → link clicks → installs → activation
There is loss at every step, and you need to know where the weak link is:
- Many views, few profile visits → the videos never show the product, or there is no call to action
- Many profile visits, few link clicks → the bio is weak and what you offer is unclear
- Many link clicks, few installs → the store page is weak (that is an ASO problem)
[PRACTICE] Without this chain you cannot know which part to fix — and people usually fix the wrong one.
🛠 Practice task
Plan five videos for next week in the three useful / two product structure from the example. Open the product videos with the problem and show the product in the middle.
In parallel, build the conversion chain table: views → profile visits → link clicks → installs → activation. Add a UTM parameter or a separate short link to your bio link so you can isolate TikTok traffic.
It is done when the five videos are posted, every number in the chain is collected, and you can justify the sentence "My weakest link is ___" with those numbers. Next month, work on that link only.
