The app marketing funnel: from impression to retention

Bringing an app to market is not one action but a chain of sequential stages. At each stage some people drop out — which is why it is called a funnel.

The most common mistake someone who vibe-coded an app makes is this: they aim all their energy at the install number. But install sits in the middle of the funnel. If the stages after it are weak, buying installs is just burning money and time.

The stages of the funnel:

  • Impression — someone saw your app somewhere: in store search, on TikTok, from a friend
  • Product page view — they went to your store page
  • Install — they downloaded it
  • Activation — they opened the app and got real value for the first time (e.g. created their first note, processed their first photo)
  • Retention — they came back: day 1, day 7, day 30
  • Revenue — they paid, or delivered value to you in some other form
  • Referral — they told someone else
StageWhat drives this stageSymptom when it is weak
ImpressionASO keywords, social content, PR, adsNobody sees you in the store — impressions are near zero
Page view → installIcon, screenshots, preview video, subtitle, ratingMany reach the page but few download (low conversion rate)
Install → activationOnboarding, first screen, when you ask for permissionsThey install, open, and leave within 30 seconds
Activation → retentionThe product's real usefulness, a reason that builds habitLow D1 retention — almost nobody comes back the next day
Retention → revenuePaywall placement, price, value propositionThey use it but do not pay

Where should you fix the funnel? The answer is always the same: at the stage that loses the most people.

This is one of the most valuable ideas in marketing. Say your store page gets 1000 views, 100 people install (10% conversion), 20 activate, 4 come back the next day.

If you shoot more TikToks and push page views to 2000, you end up with 8 returning users. But if you raise activation from 20% to 40% — with no new traffic at all — you also get 8, and on top of that every visitor after that becomes twice as efficient.

Hence the rule: fix the bottom of the funnel before the top. Pouring water into a leaking bucket is pointless.

Practice. Draw the funnel for your own app on paper. Write one number for each stage — if you don't know it, write "unknown". Then look: how many stages say "unknown"? That is the first thing you need to learn. Done means: for all six stages you have either a number or a one-sentence plan for where you will get it.
