What a growth loop is, and how it differs from a funnel

A funnel works in one direction: you pour people in at the top and users come out at the bottom. The more you pour, the more comes out — but when you stop pouring, everything stops.

A growth loop is a cycle: the output feeds back into the input. When a loop is running, each new user causes the next one to arrive.

A simple comparison:

  • Funnel thinking: "I shot 20 TikToks this month and got 500 installs. Next month I have to shoot 20 more."
  • Loop thinking: "Every user sends their notes to a friend, the friend opens the link and installs the app. 500 users bring 80 new users, who in turn..."

The difference is whether your work has to repeat. In a funnel you do the same work every month. In a loop you build it once and then improve it.

Loop typeHow it worksWhich apps it suits
Viral / sharingThe user sends the output outward → the recipient discovers the appApps whose output is shareable: design, editing, reports
Content loopUsers create content → the content is found in search → new usersApps that create a public profile or page
Referral / inviteThe user invites and both sides get a rewardApps whose value rises with joint use
ASO loopUsers → reviews and ratings → ranking rises → more usersWorks for every app — the most underrated loop
Paid loopAds → users → revenue → more adsOnly when LTV > CAC; does not work for free apps

Which loop is realistic for a vibe-coded app?

The answer is usually the ASO loop, and people miss it because it does not sound like "growth hacking". Yet the mechanism is a complete loop:

A new user → likes the app → leaves a review and rating → the rating rises → store ranking rises → more impressions → more new users.

The strength of this loop depends on your product quality and when you ask for a rating — both under your control.

The second most realistic is the sharing loop, but it only works when the app's output is something that can be sent outward. If the output stays inside the app (a personal budget, say), a sharing loop is artificial and will not work.

An important warning: inventing a loop where none exists is the single biggest waste of marketing time. Not every app has a viral loop, and that is fine. In that case the right path is to build the content channel (TikTok/Reels) as steady work and strengthen the ASO loop.

You test whether a loop is running with one question: "If I do nothing this month, how many new users arrive next month?" If the answer is "close to zero", there is no loop — what you have is a funnel. That is not bad news, just a different working mode.

Practice. Take your app's output and ask: can this leave the app? As an image, a PDF, a link, a piece of text? If it can, you have a candidate for a sharing loop. Done means: you have either described one sharing mechanism, or argued that your app has no such loop and you will focus on the ASO loop instead.
