For You feed eligibility standards: the invisible restriction
This is the mechanism creators suffer from most and understand least — because it is invisible. The video is not removed, no strike arrives, there is no notice. The video simply does not distribute in the For You feed.
[OFFICIAL] TikTok built this as a separate layer: a category of content that does not violate the rules but is not suitable for recommendation. Such content is not removed and can still be found other ways — through search, your profile, your followers. It just is not shown in the For You feed.
There are two main categories: unoriginal and low-quality content.
| Category | Official definition | How it happens in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Unoriginal | Copied from others, or with minimal original input or edits | Re-uploading someone's video; raw AI output |
| Watermark | Someone else's visible watermark or a superimposed logo | The CapCut watermark; video downloaded from another platform |
| Low quality — length | Extremely short clips | Two- or three-second clips with no content |
| Low quality — format | Videos consisting only of GIFs | GIFs stitched together |
| Low quality — content | Meaningless reactions, low-quality images, slideshow videos | Empty split-screen reactions; blurry image slideshows |
| QR code | Content carrying a QR code | Adding a QR code for promotion |
How you see it: the notice on the video.
When TikTok judges a video ineligible for the For You feed it says so on the video and offers an appeal button. So the moment the "shadowban" feeling arrives, open your last 20 videos and check — if the notice is there, you have your answer.
[PRACTICE] When you see it, do two things:
- Appeal — if you believe it is wrong, the button exists and it works
- Find the cause — look for what the flagged videos have in common. There is usually a pattern: the same music, footage from the same source, the same editing approach
The second is the more useful move: better to find the cause and not repeat it across the next 50 videos than to appeal one.
What "not removed" means — and why it matters.
[OFFICIAL] Content ineligible for the For You feed can still be discovered: through search, by people who follow the account, and via the profile.
The practical consequence is that such a video is not entirely dead:
- If its search SEO is good, it can keep pulling views from search
- Existing followers still see it
- Anyone opening your profile finds it
That is a further reason not to delete it. Deleting closes those views off and gains you nothing.
[PRACTICE] But do not fool yourself: the For You feed is the main channel for growth. If your videos land in this category regularly, the problem is systemic and needs fixing.
The three most common causes, each with a five-minute fix:
- The CapCut watermark → turn the watermark off in export settings (stage 3). The most common cause and the easiest to fix
- Video downloaded from another platform → do not use it. Cropping the watermark does not solve the sourcing problem
- Raw AI output → add your own voice, your own footage or your own experience (stage 4, the slop test)
Start with these three. For most creators the problem is one of them — nothing complicated.
🛠 Practice task
Open your last 30 videos and list the ones carrying an ineligibility notice. For each, fill four columns: date, footage source, music source, and the edit/export detail.
Compare the flagged and unflagged videos to find what they share.
It is done when you can write one sentence: "My videos are being judged ineligible because of ___" — and post the next five with that cause removed. If no notice appears, you found the right cause.
