Auditing risky tactics: bought followers, bots, automation, multiple accounts

Most of what is sold online as "TikTok growth" either does not work or puts your account at risk. This topic takes them one by one and asks three questions: what it promises, what it actually does, what happens to your account.

Start with the general principle: [OFFICIAL] TikTok prohibits fake engagement — coordinated or purchased interaction. Spam behaviour is a separate policy category and brings strikes.

But the strongest argument is not the rule, it is the arithmetic: bought followers do not watch your videos. Your retention percentage therefore falls — the denominator grows and the numerator does not.

TacticThe promiseWhat actually happensStatus
Bought followersThe account looks "serious"They do not watch → your retention percentage falls → reach dropsProhibited — fake engagement
Bought views or likesThe algorithm will boost the videoViews without retention — to the system that is a bad signalProhibited

The arithmetic of bought followers — understand this before the rule.

Say you have 1,000 real followers and your video is shown to 300 of them. 200 watch it through: 67% completion.

Now you buy 10,000 fake followers. The system still shows the video to an audience, but the pool now contains fake accounts. They watch nothing. The same real 200 still watch, but the denominator has grown: your completion rate collapses.

[PRACTICE] The result: bought followers make your metrics worse. That is a purely mechanical harm that arrives before any policy question. So this tactic is not a matter of "will they catch me" — it does not work.

The multiple-accounts question — when it is fine and when it is not.

This is one of the most asked questions, and the answer has nuance.

[PRACTICE] Unproblematic cases:

  • Different accounts in different niches — programming on one, photography on another. Different content, no duplication
  • A personal account plus a brand or product account — separate audiences, separate content

Risky cases:

  • The same content on several accounts — that is duplicate/unoriginal territory outright
  • Accounts opened to prop each other up — coordinated engagement
  • An account opened to replace a banned one — TikTok acts against attempts to circumvent bans

The most practical argument is again mechanical: running two accounts at the same quality takes twice the time. Ninety consecutive days on one account beats forty-five half-hearted days on two.

"What about a VPN?" — the most frequent question.

[PRACTICE] The claim circulating in the community: "switch to another country with a VPN and you get more views." There is no evidence for it and the logic is weak: [OFFICIAL] the recommendation system runs mainly on user interactions and video information, and creator and viewer being in the same country is explicitly cited as a weak indicator.

More importantly, faking your location changes your audience. Post Azerbaijani-language content and land in front of a US audience and retention collapses — they do not understand the language.

So a VPN is useless at best and harmful at worst. Spend the time on the video.

🛠 Practice task

Run the risky tactic audit on your own account: answer all five items honestly and write down the remediation step for every tactic you used.

If you gave your account details to any third-party service, change the password, enable two-step verification and review connected apps right now.

It is done when all five items are answered, the security steps are taken, and no "growth" tool is still running on your account.
